More convenience at the club entrance, less administrative effort: Facial recognition opens up new possibilities for simple, secure member access at fitness clubs. In this article, we take a closer look at how GT7 powered by XS4 Face works, the benefits it offers both operators and members, and what the registration process looks like.

Contactless access without a card, wristband or smartphone

With GT7 powered by XS4 Face, Gantner is expanding its tried-and-tested GT7 terminals to include face recognition access. This enables operators to offer their members a new, convenient and contactless access option.

At the access point, XS4 Face recognizes the registered member, whilst GT7 checks their stored access rights and controls the door, turnstile, speed gate or the connected service. This provides members with a quick and straightforward check-in, whilst operators can be certain that only authorized club members can gain access.

GT7 powered by XS4 Face combines the strengths of Gantner and Salto, within the SALTO WECOSYSTEM, providing a single trusted source and point of support.

Key features at a glance:

Effortless Access: Enrolled members are automatically recognized by their face at the access point for a quick and straightforward check-in

No physical access medium: No card, wristband or smartphone needs to be presented upon entry.

Unique Recognition: Each enrolled face is unique to the member, cannot be shared, eliminating the risk of membership transfers.

Self-enrolment: Following an invitation, members enroll securely using their own mobile device – without the need to download an additional app.

Retrofittable and scalable: The solution is designed for GT7 and GC7 installations and is suitable for individual venues as well as fitness chains.

User journey: From invitation to access

Invitation: The facility or fitness club initiates the registration process. The member receives a secure invitation. This can be fully integrated within the club MMS app.
Self-enrolment: The member gives the necessary consent and takes a selfie. Registration can be completed by the member, using their own mobile device, at a time and place convenient to them, regardless of opening hours.
On-site recognition: XS4 Face captures the member’s image at the access point, attempts a face match and performs a Presentation Attach Detection (PAD), a security test to prevent the use of a false identity. Only enrolled and authorized members can gain access.
Validation by GT7: If an enrolled member is recognized, the ID is sent to the GT7 which checks the stored access rights for that member ID, grants or denies access, and clearly displays the result on the terminal and on the XS4 Face Camera. The club has complete control of membership management at all times.

Data protection and security

XS4 Face has been designed from the outset to be 100% GDPR compliant, for example, requiring the explicit consent of each enrolled member, minimizing the data held, and localizing the data processing.

The Face Identification Records (FIR), otherwise known as biometric templates are only stored and processed locally on the secure XS4 Face server. No photos are held on the XS4 Face Device or the local server. No FIR’s are stored on the XS4 Face device.

The integrated PAD system prevents attempts to deceive the system using photos, videos or masks.

While it is the Operators' responsibility to clarify the legal requirements applicable to their location before installation, XS4 Face has been developed to meet the requirements of international data privacy legislation. Salto has created a number of tools to support XS4 Face customers with these requirements as they introduce XS4 Face to their operations:

GT7

The GT7 terminal, optional with face recognition, fingerprint or barcode reader, stands out due to its features like RFID and NFC identification and its unique app concept. The apps can be uploaded onto the universal hardware and determine whether the device is used as an access, time, or info terminal.

With the corresponding app, our GT7 can also be used as a central terminal for managing locker locks. In this case, lockers can be selected and opened centrally via the GT7. The lock can then be operated directly at the locker or still be controlled via the terminal.
